Project Name: Afweyn and Tarcaso Shallow Wells FFA Project, 2015
FDPs: Taracaso and Afweyn
Afweyn and Taracaso is Agro-Pastoralist Villages in Mudug Region-Galkayo District which locates 17 Km in the South East of Bacadweyn and 50 Km to North East of Galkayo Town. The resident in the areas get their living from the products of livestock and agriculture. The areas are dependent few shallow as only source of water. The agricultural products are both for subsistence and cash crops. Because of poor rain fall for the last two years some of the residents have been displaced and others were living in a condition of absolute poverty. Furthermore the production of firms has become absolutely Zero and this mainly because of lack of rainfall for last two years and poor irrigation water.
In considering the nature of land, local community priorities and availability of support Deegaan Relief and Development Organization (DRDO) and their partner of World food Programme (WFP) established 25 Shallow wells in these Villages through Food for Asset Projects from February to April 2015.
We had successfully reached the ground water for all of them after excavation of 10 m deep. The beneficiaries are now using the water in three main purposes which are irrigation for their farms, livestock and at home for drinking, cooking, washing and others.
Through the irrigation water the residents are now able to increase and improve their agricultural products of which would directly contribute to the improvement of their standard of living and fight against hunger and food insecurity. According to the interview we had with some of the beneficiaries they have told us that even now they are able to send their children to school in the town since they would get income to pay the school fees through cash crops which they would produce of the irrigation water for the shallow wells of which would have not been possible without the generous support of DRDO and WFP.
This project has been started its implementation during dry season where the food insecurity was very high so these communities and since these communities were dependent their living from the food they get from the firm and the production of the firm was absolutely zero hence they have appreciated not only the sustainable assets created but also the food distribution which boosted the morale of these communities during the difficult period.
DRDO objective is to promote lifelong self-sufficiency in these communities. With the establishment of valuable sustainable assets where by later communities can focus on sustaining their lives.
The beneficiary communities have welcomed and appreciated the implementation of the project as you can see from the above picture. Also they have again requested DRDO and their funding agency of WFP to continue these fruitful initiatives of supporting the most vulnerable people on this earth and at the same time recommended other interventions that can also increase the agricultural production such as canal rehabilitation, fencing the firms, construction of water tanks and food stores.
